Aurora is a city spanning Arapahoe County, Adams County and Douglas County in Colorado. It covers 142.7 sq mi and has a population of about 325,000 (2011 estimate). It is the third largest city in the Denver-Aurora-Broomfield metropolitan area, which has a population of 2.5 million people.
Aurora was founded in the 1880's. It was originally known as Fletcher, after its founder, a real estate developer Donald Fletcher. The Silver Crash of 1893 forced Fletcher to skip town, and in 1907, its inhabitants decided to rename it Aurora.

For decades Aurora was regarded as a smaller sibling to Denver, or even as one of its suburbs. Recently however, the city has grown so fast that its population is now over half that of Denver, leading some of its residents to express a desire that Aurora should be given equal recognition.
Aurora has a military base since 1918, when the Army General Hospital opened there. It was used to treat servicemen wounded in the Second World War. Other military bases were also opened in the area, including the Lowry Air Force Base (which closed in 1994) and the Buckley Air Force Base.
Located at an elevation of 5,471 ft (1,668 m), Aurora experiences a semi-arid climate. Its hottest months are July and August, when temperature regularly exceeds 87°F (30.6°C). On the other hand, in January the temperature may drop to 16°F (-8.9°C).
