Baton Rouge is the capital and second-largest city in Louisiana. It covers 79.1 sq mi (204.8 sq km) and has a population of 230,000 (2011 estimate), within a metropolitan area of 800,000 people. Baton Rouge is located in East Baton Rouge Parish, on the southeastern part of Louisiana. Its name means "red stick" in French.
Baton Rouge is the third southmost state capital in the United States after Austin, Texas, and Tallahassee, Florida. experiences a humid subtropical climate. The warmest months are July and August, when the high temperature of the day regularly breaches 90°F (32°C). January is the coldest month, when the average low of the day dips to 40°F (4.5°C).

Baton Rouge is today a major industrial city in the American South. Among the industries dominant here include medical, petrochemical and research. The city also has a major port, the ninth largest in the country in terms of tonnage.

Interstate 10 runs through Baton Rouge, connecting it with Lafayette in the west and New Orleans in the southeast. Interstate 12 starts and Baton Rouge and continues east to join I-10 again in Slidell.
