Billings is the largest city in Montana, USA. Located quite isolated in the northwestern part of contiguous United States, Billings has the biggest metropolitan area between Denver and Calgary and between Sioux Falls and Spokane. It covers 33.8 sq mi (87.6 sq km) and has a population of 104,000 people.

Billings experiences a semi-arid climate. Summers are hot while winters cold and dry. July is the hottest month, registering an average high temperature of 88.4°F (31.3°F). January is the coldest month, with average low temperature of 13.3°F (-10.4°C). Billing is on the whole quite dry. The wettest month here is May, which receives on average 2.39 in (60.7 mm) of rain. Billings is located within the Yellowstone Valley. The area has been inhabited for thousands of years, and pictographs left behind by prehistoric people have been found at Pictograph Cave. These were made 2,100 years ago. Stone tools, paintings and other instruments have also been discovered on the site.

The Billings area was first explored by William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The town of Billing was founded in 1882 and was named in honor of Frederick H. Billings, the former president of the Northern Pacific Railroad.

Today Billings is one of the fastest growing areas in the United States, thanks largely to its geographical location. This enables the city to play an important role as a trade and distribution center for the region.

Visiting Billings

Billings is served by Interstate 90 and 94. You can also fly there, arriving at Billings Logan International Airport (BIL), just a couple of miles from downtown Billings. The airport receives direct flights from Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St Paul, Phoenix/Mesa, Salt Lake City and Seattle/Tacoma, among others.

    Country highway designated an All-American Road, and one of the most beautiful drives in the country.

  2. Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area
    Public recreation area at Yellowtail Dam.

  3. Chief Plenty Coups State Park and Home
    Site within the Crow Indian Reservation that includes Chief Plenty Coups' Home, a National Historic Landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

  4. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument
    Site of a battle which took place in 1876.

  5. Pictograph Cave State Park
    Site preserving the prehistoric cave drawings that were done over two thousand years ago.

  6. Pompeys Pillar National Monument
    One of the smallest national monuments in the United States.

  7. Red Lodge Mountain Resort
    An alpine ski resort along the eastern front of the Beartooth Mountains.

  8. Yellowstone National Park
    Site in Wyoming famous for its geothermal features.

  9. ZooMontana
    The only zoo and botanical park in Montana, occupying a 70-acre (28 ha) area in Billings.
