Binghamton is a city in central southern New York State. Covering 11.0 sq mi (28.6 sq km), it has a population of around 48,000 (2011 estimate). The city is the county seat of Broome County and the main city in the Greater Binghamton Metropolitan Area, which has a population of 252,000.
The city of Binghamton is located in a bowl-shaped valley at the confluence of the Susquehanna River and Chenango River. The city is close to the border with Pennsylvania. Named after William Bingham, who bought the land there in 1792, the Binghamton was first settled in 1802. A village was established there in 1834, and incorporated as a city in 1867. The city served as a hub since the days of railroad transportation. It was where major high-tech firms such as IBM, Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems and Rockwell Collins had their start.

Binghamton was once a major manufacturing base. It had a population exceeding 80,000 in the mid 20th century. However, as the factories closed down, a significant portion of its population moved away. That, coupled with suburbanization, led to a marked decrease in its population.
Binghamton experiences a humid continental climate. Its winters are cold and snowy while its summers wet and warm. You can expect some snow from November until March, with the heaviest in January. The coldest month here is also January, when the temperature drops to 15°F (-9.4°C). The warmest months are June through August, with the highest average temperatures in July, at around 78.1°F (25.6°C). July also has the longest days with a total of 294.5 hours of sunshine compared with December, with only 80.6 hours.
Binghamton is located between the Finger Lakes to the west and the Catskills Mountains to the east. Due to its proximity to two major rivers, it has suffered a number of floods every few decades, causing considerable damage to property in the city and surrounding areas.

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
