Brockton has produced a number of famous boxers including Rocky Marciano and Marvin Hagler, leading to it being known as the City of Champions. The city is along the Salisbury Plain River. It dates back to 1649, when the land was purchased. The English called the area Bridgewater until 1821, when it became North Bridgewater, and in 1874, it was renamed to Brockton in honor of Isaac Brock, a local merchant.
