Cambridge is a city in Middlesex County in Massachusetts. It is within the Greater Boston area. The city has a population of 105,000 (2011 estimate), making it the fifth most populous city in Massachusetts.

Cambridge was first settled around 1631 by the original group of Puritan colonists who arrived from England. It was originally called Newe Towne, but was renamed in 1638 to Cambridge, in honor of the University of Cambridge of England, as many of the city's founding fathers were Cambridge University alumni, among them its president Henry Dunster, first benefactor John Harvard, first school master Nathaniel Eaton, and the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, John Winthrop.

True to its name, the settlement of Cambridge grew to become a world-renowned center of education, on par with its namesake. It is home to Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Unlike other cities in the state, Cambridge has comparatively few large public parks. This however is compensated by the expansive leafy campuses of its two big universities, namely Harvard Yard and MIT's Great Lawn. The availability of pedestrian-friendly walkways give the city one of the highest percentage of commuters who walk or cycle to work.

Visiting Cambridge, Massachusetts

If you're flying in, the nearest airport is the Logon International Airport in Boston. The airport is served by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), which manages the bus, subway, commuter rail and ferry systems of Greater Boston area, inclusive of Cambridge.

If coming by car, Cambridge is off Interstate 90, approached from Exit 18 from the south, Exit 20 from downtown Boston and off Interstate 93, turning off at Exit 27 from the north.
