Cedar Breaks National Monument preserves a natural amphitheater canyon in Iron County, Utah. Covering 602,779 acres (243,936 ha), the site stretches over three mile near Cedar City, near to Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park. It was established on 22 August, 1933.

Cedar Breaks National Monument was formed by erosion of the rocks which carves a canyon that is over 2,000 feet (610 m) in depth. The rim of the canyon is 10,000 ft (3,000 m) above sea level. Due to the height, the area is often covered in snow in winter, making it inaccessible to vehicles between October through May.

The natural amphitheater of Cedar Breaks covers the western side of the Markagunt Plateau, which also forms part of Zion National Park. As the rocks contain various minerals such as iron and manganese, the canyon and hoodoos are colored in different shades of yellow, orange, red and purple.

Compared to Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park, Cedar Breaks receive fewer visitors. As a result, it is easier to spot wildlife in Cedar Breaks. Among the fauna of this national monument includes small to moderate-sized animals such as porcupines, mule deer, pocket gophers and chipmunks.

Visiting Cedar Breaks National Monument, Utah

Cedar Breaks National Monument is near Cedar City. Take the I-15 (Veterans Memorial Highway) to Cedar City, turning off the highway at Exit 59. From there continue on W 200 N, turn right to N Main St, left on E Center St which continues as Utah State Route 14, then turn left to Route 148 and continue till the visitor center. The small visitor center of Cedar Breaks National Monument is open only from June through mid-October, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. Entrance fee is $4 per person aged 16 and above, valid for 7 days.
