Clemson University, founded in 1889, in fact predates the city, which was known as Calhoun until 1943, when it was renamed after the university. The name honors Thomas Green Clemson, the university's founder. On the other hand the name Calhoun honors Clemson's father-in-law, John C. Calhoun, who was the seventh Vice President of the United States.
Clemson experiences a humid subtropical climate with humid summers and cool, dry winters. July and August are the hottest months, when the average high temperature climbs to 90°F (32°C). January experiences the coldest temperature, with the average low dropping to 30°F (-1°C). Rain is quite evenly distributed throughout the year, and totals about 50.4 in (1,280 mm).
