Columbus, Georgia

Columbus is a city in Muscogee County, Georgia. It is located by the banks of the Chattahoochee River. The city covers 220.8 sq mi (572 sq km) and has a population of 190,000 (2011 estimate). Located some 100 miles (160 km) to the south of Atlanta, Columbus is the third largest city in the state.

Columbus is one of the three Fall Line Cities of Atlanta, located where the hilly terrain of Piedmont plateau meets the coastal plains. It experiences a humid subtropical climate. The hottest month here is July, with average temperatures of 92°F (33.3°C). January can be very cold, having average low temperatures of -2°F (-18.9°C). July is also the wettest month with 5.04 in (128 mm) of precipitation.

Columbus was founded in 1828. It was named after Christopher Columbus. The city plan was drawn by Dr Edwin L. DeGraffenried. The city began to develop rapidly in the 1850's following the completion of a railroad. The American Civil War had an indirect positive impact on the city, as it benefited from manufacturing of supplies for the Confederate army. During the ensuing clash between the Union and Confederate troops on 16 April, 1865, the city and many of its factories were destroyed.

Reconstruction of Columbus began immediately after the war, and the city quickly expanded beyond its original size. By the later part of the 20th century, however, Columbus was experiencing a deterioration of its downtown area. Revitalization of the urban area was carried out in the 1990's. Many of its historic buildings were preserved and restored.

Columbus is today a modern city with a vibrant performing arts scene. The cityscape is a mix of modern buildings with historic structures.

Visiting Columbus

Interstate 185 is the main highway connecting Columbus with the rest of the country. Other highways include US Highway 27, 80 and 431.
