Devils Tower National Monument is a protected site preserving a famous volcanic neck in Wyoming. The volcanic neck is formally known as a monolithic igneous intrusion. It is located in the Black Hills near Hulett and Sundance, in Crook County, above the Bell Fourche River.

Devils Tower got its name in 1875, when it was visited by an expedition led by Col. Richard Irving Dodge. The name is said to be a misinterpretation to turn out to be Bad God's Tower, or later improved to Devil's Tower. The local Native American tribes living in the area have various names for the monolith including Bear's Lodge and Aloft on a Rock, among others.

The height of Devils Tower is 1,267 feet (386 m) from its base, while its summit is 5,112 feet (1,558 m) above sea level.

Devil's Tower National Monument was declared by President Theodore Roosevelt on 24 September, 1906 covering 1,347 acres (5.45 sq km). In 2005 there were proposals to designate the monolith as Bear Lodge National Historic Landmark. That proposal was opposed by US Representative Barbara Cubin, who argued that a change of name will hurt tourism and negatively impact the people living around there who depended on the well-known icon as a source of income.

Visiting Devils Tower National Monument, Wyoming

Devils Tower National Monument is located in northeastern Wyoming. The nearest town is Gillette. Take Interstate-90 heading east from Gillette. Turn off at Moorcroft to US Route 14 and left again to Wyoming State Route 24. You will see Devils Tower from a distance to your left. The junction to the entrance of the national monument is on the left side of the road.

Devils Tower National Monument is open all year round. The visitor center is usually open from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm in the warmer months and 9:00 am to 5:00 pm in the colder months. Entrance fee is $10 for private vehicle with driver and passengers, valid for 7 days.
