Duluth is a port city on the northern part of Minnesota. With a population of 86,000 (2011 estimate), it is the fourth largest city in the state. Duluth is also the county seat of St Louis County. It has a metropolitan population of 276,000.

Duluth is on the westernmost point of the Great Lakes, in Lake Superior. It is the westernmost deep-water port of the Atlantic Ocean. The city covers 87.3 sq mi (226.2 sq km). It experiences a humid continental climate with cold, snowy winters and warm summers. Temperatures in summer is in the 70's °F (21-26°C) while winter temperatures are often below 0°F (-18°C).

The Duluth area was inhabited by the Sioux tribe of Native Americans in the 17th century. They were driven out by the Ojibwa tribe in 1654. French fur traders Pierre-Esprit Radisson and Médard des Groseilliers arrived here in 1659. Then in 1679, Sieur du Lhut arrived. The settlement was named Duluth after him.

The economy of the Duluth area shifted from fur trading to timber and then to timber harvesting. The laying out of a railway line connecting it with Saint Paul helped to spur economic growth, and by the turn of the 20th century, it has become one of the wealthiest cities in the country.

The prosperity of Duluth continued to grow in the first half of the 20th century, riding on its steel industry, but by the 1960's, the industry was facing foreign competition. It dealt a severe blow to the city's economy, resulting in closures of shipyards and heavy machinery plants.

By the start of the 21st century, Duluth is reinventing itself by diversifying into retail shopping, medical care and banking. It is also creating a vibrant art and entertainment scene, drawing increasing numbers of visitors to support its economy.

Duluth is connected to Minneapolis-Saint Paul by Interstate 35. You can reach it from the Twin Cities in 2.5 hours by car. Alternatively you can fly to Duluth landing at Duluth International Airport (DLH), which gets regular flights from a number of cities including Chicago, Detroit and Las Vegas.
