Fort Collins is a city in Larimer County, Colorado. The city, which is also the county seat of Larimer County, covers 53.38 sq mi (122.1 sq km) and has a population of 144,000 (2010 estimate), making it the fourth largest city in the state behind Denver, Colorado Springs and Aurora.
Fort Collins is the home to the Colorado State University. It is located on the Cache La Poudre River, about 57 miles (92 km) north of Denver. The city began as a military outpost in 1864, created to protect the overland mail routes from attacks by local tribes of Native Americans. After the fort was decommissioned, the settlement continued to grow as a civilian township.

Fort Collins continued to grow throughout the early 20th century, with its development slowed by the Great Depression. The economy of the city was dependent on agriculture, particularly sugar-beet farming.
Fort Collins experiences a semi-arid climate. Hottest month is July, when the average temperature reaches 85.5°F (29.72°C). Coldest month is January, when the average temperature drops to 15.3°F (-9.28°C). Fort Collins may experience snow from November until March.

Interstate 25 passes to the east of Fort Collins, connecting it with Denver to the south and Cheyenne to the north. You can also fly to the city, landing at the Fort Collins/Loveland Airport, which receives flights by Allegiant Air from Las Vegas. For more connections, use the Denver International Airport and take a bus from Denver.
