Fort Pulaski National Monument is a historic site located between the city of Savannah and Tybee Island, Georgia. It preserves the fort where the Union Army successfully tested a rifled cannon, making brick fortifications obsolete. The testing was conducted in 1862 when the American Civil War was on-going.

Fort Pulaski was built in 1829 to provide greater defence to the port of Savannah. It is located on Cockspur Island, at the mouth of the Savannah River. The fort was named in 1833 after Kazimierz Pulaski, the Polish-born soldier who fought in the American War of Independence under George Washington.

The secession of South Carolina from the United States in 1860 started the American Civil War. Then Georgia seceded, and Fort Pulaski fell into Confederate hands. On 10 April, 1862, Union forces asked the Confederates to surrender the fort but was rejected. Union troops then began a long-sustained bombardment of the fort. After 30 hours, the new rifled cannon breached one of the corner walls of the fort. When that happened, Colonel Olmstead reluctantly surrendered the fort. During the confrontation, only one Confederate soldier and one Union soldier were injured.

By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
