Fort Worth is a major city in the northern part of Texas. With a population of 730,000 (2011 estimate), it is the fifth largest city in Texas and the 16th largest in the United States. Fort Worth is the second most populous city in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan area after Dallas. It serves as the county seat of Tarrant County.

Fort Worth was named after Major General William Jenkins Worth. After the Mexican-American War of 1846, Worth proposed the construction of forts to mark the Western Texas frontier. He died shortly thereafter, and his successor Major Ripley A Arnold named the camp by the bank of the Trinity river in his honor. It was ninitially called Camp Worth and then later Fort Worth.

Fort Worth experiences a humid subtropical climate. The hottest month here is July, when the daily high temperature regularly reaches 97°F (36°C). The coldest month is January, when the average low temperature of the day drops down to 21°F (-1°C). The wettest month in Fort Worth is May while the driest is January.

Visiting Fort Worth, Texas

Fort Worth is located to the west of Dallas. A number of highways connect these two cities including Interstate 20 and 30. The Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is located between the two cities, and is 17 miles from downtown Fort Worth. It is one of the hubs of American Airlines, which has its headquarters in Fort Worth.

If you are driving to Fort Worth, take the I-35 from Oklahoma City in the north or San Antonio in the south. The I-20 passes through from east to west, while the I-30 continues from Dallas towards Little Rock.
