Gary is located on the southern coast of Lake Michigan. The city, which is shaped like the letter T, sits on a base of good quality sand that was mined for the manufacture of glass. It experiences a continental climate similar to Chicago. The warmest month here is July, when the average high temperature touches 83.9°F (28.8°C). January is the coldest month with average low temperature of 13.9°F. June is the wettest month with 4.469 in (113.5 mm) of precipitation.

Gary, Indiana, was founded in 1906 and named after Elbert H. Gary, the chairman of U.S. Steel. As would therefore be expected, the city was established as a steel manufacturing center, and its early growth was directly impacted by the industry.

The steel industry in Gary suffered a decline in the 1960s in the face of overseas competition, resulting in many lay offs and an increase in crime. At the same time, the population composition of the city evolved as White Americans moved away while African Americans moved in. By the turn of the 21st century, blacks account for 84% of the city's population, the highest percentage of African Americans for a city bigger than 100,000. The city was one of the first to elect an African-American mayor.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
