Great Basin National Park is a national park in east-central Nevada, near the state border with Utah. It covers 77,180 acres (31,230 hectares between the Sierra Nevada and the Wasatch Mountains.

The Great Basin National Park is renowned for its groves of ancient bristlecone pines and its natural features such as Lehman Caves. The Great Basin bristlecone pines are some of the oldest trees on earth. Some of the specimens are over four thousand years old.

Before Great Basin National Park was created, the Lehman Caves National Monument was established in 1922. It was included when Great Basin National Park was created on 27 October, 1986.

Lehman Caves have an ecosystem of its own. The cave is home to a good number of resident wildlife including mice, chipmunks, several species of bat, crickets, spiders and mites. Another featues of Great Basin National Park is Lexington Arch, one of the largest limestone arches in western United States.

The highest point in Great Basin National Park is Wheeler Peak, standing at 13,065 ft (3,982 m). Located 14 miles to the west of the Utah border in the Great Basin Desert, it is the highest peak located entirely within Nevada (as opposed to Boundary Peak whose summit is in California).

Visiting Great Basin National Park, Nevada

US Highway 6 / 50 pass over the norther part of the national park. From this highweay, turn south to Nevada State Highway 487 until the town of Baker. Then head west on Highway 488 (Lehman Caves Rd) to reach the park.

Coming from the opposite direction, from the south of Utah, take Utah State Highway 21. Crossing the state border into Nevada, the highway becomes Nevada State Highway 487. Continue north until Baker, then head west on Highway 488 to the park.

Lehman Caves Visitor Center (775) 234-7331 x 212 is open 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Pacific Time year round, but closed on New Years Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. This entrance park does not change any entrance fees.
