Haleakala National Park is a national park on the island of Maui in Hawaii. The park, which was established on 1 July, 1961, covers 30,183 acres (122.15 sq km). A 24,719 acre (100.03 sq km) of the park is also designated a wilderness area.

Haleakala National Park was originally part of Hawaii National Park, which includes the Mauna Loa and Kilauea volcanoes on the island of Hawaii, established in 1916. Then in 1961 the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was made a separate entity. The new name Haleakala was chosen for the protected areas in Maui. Its name means "house of the sun", after the Hawaiian legend of the demigod Maui imprisoning the sun there to make the day longer.

Within Haleakala National Park is the dormant East Maui Volcano, also called the Haleakala Volcano. Standing at 10,023 ft (3,055 m), it last eruped in 1490. The Hawaii State Route 378 goes up to the summit. The crater measures 6.99 miles (11.25 km) across, 2 miles (3.2 km) wide and 2,600 ft (790 m) deep.

Another section of Haleakala National Park is the coastal Kipahulu area. This section is separated from the Haleakala, and is reached by a winding coastal road. The area along the Palikea Stream is dotted with natural pools where visitors can take a dip, or hike up to Waimoku Falls.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.

To get to know me better, do follow me on Facebook!
