Joliet is the fourth largest city in Illinois by population. It is located between Will County and Kendall County. It covers an area of 38.35 sq mi (99 sq km), at an average elevation of 643 ft (196 m). The city has a population of 147,000 (2011 estimate). It observes the Central Standard Time (UTC-6) and in summer the Central Daylight Time (UTC-5).

Joliet was first settled in 1833. It was originally name Juliet, after the daughter of James B. Campbell, the local treasurer of the canal commissioners. However the local residents renamed it Joliet in 1852, in honor of French Canadian explorer Louis Jolliet, who was the first to arrive in the area, back in 1673.

Joliet developed as a manufacturing center in the early 20th century, but like many cities in the region, it too was affected by the decline in manufacturing towards the end of the 20th century. At one time its unemployment rate shot up as high as 25%. However Joliet benefited from its proximity to Chicago, reinventing itself as a bedroom community for people relocating to the Chicago area, with its attractive real estate prices. This contributes to making Joliet the fastest growing city in the Midwest and the 18th fastest growing in the Unived States.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
