Kansas City is the largest city in Missouri. The metropolitan area of Kansas City covers 318 sq mi (820 sq km), and spreads across Jackson County, Clay County, Cass County and Platte County. It is one of the two county seats of Jackson County, the other being Independence. It also includes Kansas City, Kansas, located across the state border to the west.

Kansas City has a population of close to half a million people (2011 estimate) within a metropolitan area with a population of 2.1 million people. It is located at the confluence of the Missouri River and Kansas River.

The first European to arrive at the Kansas City area was Étienne de Veniard, who later wrote a document describing it in 1713. The Spanish took control of the area under the Treaty of Paris in 1763 although the French fur traders continued to work the area under Spanish rule. In 1831 Mormon settlers established a settlement there. The town of Kansas was incorporated in 1850, and was elevated on 22 February to the City of Kansas.

Population growth was fueled by the completion of the Hannibal & St. Joseph Railroad Bridge across the Missouri River. In 1889, the city was renamed Kansas City. By the turn of the 20th century, it had 163,752 residents and was the 22nd biggest city in the United States.

Kansas City is noted for having over two hundred fountains, said to be more than any other city except Rome, giving it the nickname "City of Fountains". It is also called Paris of the Plains because of its many boulevards. In addition, Kansas City also hold the title of Heart of America, as it is the biggest city nearest the geographic center of the Contiguous United States.

You can easily reach Kansas City by road. Interstate 70 passes through Kansas City, Missiouri, from east to west, linking it with Kansas City, Kansas, and Denver to the west, and St Louis and Indianapolis to the east. Interstate 35 connects it with Des Moines to the north, and Wichita and Oklahoma City to the south.

If you are flying in, the main airport is the Kansas City International Airport (MCI), located 15 miles to the northwest of downtown Kansas City, a hub for Frontier Airlines and Great Lakes Airlines. Southwest Airlines also operates numerous flights linking the city with major cities across the United States.
