Keene is a city in Strafford Couny, in southeastern New Hampshire. It covers 29 sq mi (75.2 sq km) and has a population of 30,000 people 37.6 sq mi (97.3 sq km) and has a population of 23,500 people (2011 estimate). The city hosts the annual Pumpkin Fest around Halloween.

Keene dates back to 1735, when Colonial Governor Jonathan Belcher granted lots to 63 families to settle there. Originally called Upper Ashuelot, the town was later in 1753 renamed after Sir Benjamin Keene, the English minister to Spain.

Keene developed with a variety of industries in the mid 19th century, but most of these went bust during the Great Depression. Today the city has evolved into a center for insurance, education and tourism. It is home to Keene State College and Antioch University New England.

Leave Interstate 91 at Exit 3 and continue east on Vermont State Route 9 (Franklin Pierce Highway) until you reach Keene.
