Located 6,225 ft (1,897 m) above sea level, it covers an area of 191.59 sq km (496.21 sq mi). Lake Tahoe has a maximum length of 22 miles (35 km) and a maximum width of 12 miles (19 km). It reaches a maximum depth of 1,645 ft (501 m). The shore around it is 71 miles (114 km) in length. It is the largest alpine lake in North America and the second deepest lake in the United States after Crater Lake in Oregon.

Lake Tahoe was only officially known as such in 1945. Before that, it went by various names including Lake Bigler. The name Tahoe was first used in 1862. It is said to be a corrupted form of the Native American Washo word dá'aw, meaning "lake". Bigler on the other hand was another name given to it in 1853 by surveyor general of California, William Eddy, in honor of John Bigler, the third governor of California.

Today Lake Tahoe has become a major tourist destination in both summer and winter. During summer, there are a variety of water sports available on the lake, while in winter, visitors come for the snow and for skiing. There are also ski resorts in the area. On the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe as a number of big casinos.

Although two thirds of Lake Tahoe is in California, the major cities near it are on the Nevada side. There are a number of cities around or in the vicinity of Lake Tahoe, the largest being Reno. Ever closer is the Nevada state capital, Carson City. Other cities include Sunnyside-Tahoe City on the northwest shore, Truckee to the north, South Lake Tahoe on the southern shore, and Incline Village on the northeastern shore.

Visiting Lake Tahoe

Fly to Reno, then take the I-80 heading south to Truckee, where you exit and head south on either Route 267 to Tahoe Vista on the north shore, or Route 89 to Sunnyside-Tahoe City on the northwest shore.
