Longmont is a city in north-central Colorado. The city limits are within Boulder County and Weld County. Longmont covers 21.8 sq mi (56.4 sq km) and has a population of 86,000 (2011 estimate). It is in the Mountain Standard Time zone, which is seven hours behind of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC-7) and six hours behind during Daylight Saving Time in summer.

Longmont is located at an elevation of 4,984 ft (1,519 m). It was founded in 1871 when a group of men from Chicago sold shares to parcels of land in the new settlement, leading to the creation of the first planned township in Boulder County.

Longmont grew as an agricultural community boosted by the location of the Colorado Central Railroad line through the city. By the late 20th century, the economy of Longmont has switched from agriculture to high technology, with the arrival of several major high-tech companies such as IBM, Seagate and Maxtor. The Institute of Business & Medical Careers also opened a campus in Longmont in 2010.

Attention from the major companies setting up base in Longmont has helped to make it a more vibrant city, fueling a number of housing developments such as Prospect New Town, a new urbanist village in southern Longmont. Prospect New Town is created to provide comfortable living congruent with the lifestyle expectation of urbanists.

Visiting Longmont, Colorado

State Highway 119 connects Longmont to Boulder, the next major city while US Highway 287 connects it with Loveland. The city is 31 miles (50 km) from Denver.
