New Bern is a city in Craven County, in southeastern North Carolina. It covers 27 sq mi (69.6 sq km) and has a population of 30,000 people (2011 estimate). The city lies on the confluence of the Trent and the Neuse rivers, in North Carolina's Inner Banks region.

Situated in the Atlantic coastal plain, New Bern experiences a humid subtropical climate. Hottest month is July, with average high temperature of 88°F (31.1°C). Coldest month is January, with average low temperature of 34°F (1.1°C). August is a very wet month, receiving 6.84 in (173.7 mm) of rain.
The New Bern area was inhabited by various tribes of Native Americans until the arrival of Europeans in the 18th century. The early settlers were Swiss and German immigrant who named the settlement after Bern, Switzerland.
New Bern served as the first state capital of North Carolina. The governor's mansion, called Tryon Palace, was used as the original state capital. Built in 1770, it was burned down in the 1790s. A replica was built on the original foundation in the 1950s.
Today New Bern is a small town whose history recorded a number of state firsts, including the first road and the first ferry in the state, the first incorporated schoo and the first permanent Colonial Capitol Building.
