New Brunswick, New Jersey

New Brunswick is a city in Middlesex County in central New Jersey. It covers 5.8 sq mi (14.9 sq km) and has a population of 55,000 people (2011 estimate). The city on the south bank of the Raritan River is 27 miles (43 km) from Manhattan. It is best known as the home of Rutgers University, the largest university in New Jersey and the 8th oldest in the United States.

The New Brunswick area was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native American people. The first European settlement in the area, called Prigmore's Swamp, was established on 1681, and remained till 1697. Another settlement called Inian's Ferry was established in 1691. In 1714 a new town called New Brunswick was created here, named after the city of Braunschweig in Germany.

New Brunswick grew into an important crossroad for travelers between New York City and Philadelphia. It was incorporated as a town in 1736 and chartered as a city in 1784. In 1766, Queen's College was established in New Brunswick. It became the precursor of today's Rutgers University.

New Brunswick has a rich ethnic heritage with a substantial Hungarian population. Ethic Hungarians began settling in New Brunswick at the turn of the 20th century, and at one time accounted for a quarter of the ethnic Hungarians in New Jersey. There is also large Hispanic community in New Brunswick. They come from Latin America in the 1960s, Puerto Rico in the 1970s and from the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Ecuador and Mexico in the 1980s. At the same time, the white middle class population moved out into the newer suburbs, creating a phenomenon known as "white flight".

Today New Brunswick is noted for its many medical institutions. It is also home to large pharmaceutical companies such as Johnson & Johnson and Bristol-Myers Squibb.

From New York City, take the New Jersey Transit or the Suburban Transit buses to reach New Brunswick. If going by car, take Interstate 287 and turn off at Exit 10.
