Chelsea is a neighborhood of New York City on the western part of Manhattan. They are west of Fifth Avenue, roughly between West 15th Street to West 39th Street. The area was still farmland in the 1750's. It was gradually converted into suburb in the 1830's, and is today an urban part of New York City.
The area was associated with the garment industry. Fashion Row was originally here before it moved uptown. When that happened, the neighborhood declined and became a warehouse district. The arrival of Macy's provided a breath of fresh air, and the garment district grew around it.
Today you can find art galleries and antique shops in Chelsea, which is also home to a large gay community.
