Historic District is an area in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Its location can be described as bounded by 14th Street to the south, 30th Street to the north, the Ladies' Mile Historic District to the east, and the Hudson River and West Street to the west. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places for the heritage value of the townhouses here.

Writer Clement Clarke Moore, who wrote A Visit From St Nicholas and Twas the Night Before Christmas, was born in the neighbourhood. In the 1830's, he bought a piece of land here which he divided into lots and built townhouses. Many of these houses are highly prized real estate today.

The finest properties at Historic District are seven houses known as Cushman Row. They are Nos. 406-418 West 20th Street. They were named after their original owner Alonzo Cushman, the merchant who founded the Greenwich Savings Bank. He joined Moore and James N. Wells to be the developer of the neighborhood.

Going further along, you can advise the Italianate style on Nos. 446-450 West 20th Street. Judging from their detailed brickwork, you can tell that this street was an affluent neighborhood even in the 19th century.

How to reach the Historic District

Take the C or E train to the 23rd Street subway station. Walk south along 8th Avenue until intersection with West 20th Street. Turn right and walk west along West 20th Street until you see No. 406, which is one of the houses of Cushman Row on the Historic District.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.

To get to know me better, do follow me on Facebook!
