One Liberty Plaza

One Liberty Plaza is a skyscraper in Lower Manhattan, New York City. It was constructed on the location of the former Singer Building, which in 1968 was the second tallest building to be demolished in New York City.

Completed in 1908, the Singer Building was the tallest building in the world at that time, surpassing the City Hall Park Building. It stood at a height of 612 feet (187 meters) and had a total of 47 floors. When it was demolished in 1968, it was the tallest building to have ever been peacefully demolished.

One Liberty Plaza built in 1973. It was originally known as the US Steel Building. It stands at a height of 743 feet (226 m) and has 54 floors. At 2.2 million square feet (204,000 square meter), each floor offers almost one acre (4,046 square meter) of office space. It is one of the largest office buildings in New York.

The façade of One Liberty Plaza is black, consisting of a sculptural steel frame. The building was originally commissioned by U.S. Steel. Currently, a variety of tenants occupy the space, from large law firms to public and not-for-profit agencies like the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation and the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation.

The building is bordered by Broadway, Cortlandt Street, Church Street and Liberty Plaza. The building underwent substantial renovation in 1989 which created a new lobby and elevator system. The lobby and elevators have an extensive security system, and the building has a currently unused connection to the New York City Subway in the basement.

The building sits next to the former World Trade Center site. The September 11, 2001 incident broke some windows in the building as well as inflicted light facade damage. As of 2006, it is the 188th tallest building in the world.
