Port Authority Bus Terminal

Port Authority Bus Terminal is a major bus terminal in New York City. In fact, it is the biggest bus station in the United States and the busiest by volume of traffic in the world. The terminal occupies an entire city block in Manhattan, between Eighth and Ninth Avenues, and between West 40th and West 42th Streets. Its address is at 625 8th Avenue.

The Port Authority Bus Terminal is the main bus terminal for interstate buses into Manhattan. It is served by arteries of bus lanes on the west side of the terminal leading towards the Lincoln Tunnel. This allows the buses to bypass the congested streets during rush hour. Nonetheless the ramps entering the terminal still get congested at times.

An average of 7,200 buses pass through the Port Authority Bus Terminal every day. It is used by 200,000 commuters.

The Port Authority Bus Terminal has been located at the present site since 15 December, 1950. It consolidates the various bus terminals located throughout Midtown Manhattan. The North Wing of the bus terminal was completed in 1979. The expansion did away with the Art Deco style, replacing it with a more "modern" steel-and-glass building fashionable in the late 1970's and early 1980's. Today, however, it is considered outdated, and has even been voted as the World's Top 10 Ugliest Buildings and Monuments by Virtualtourist.

How to reach the Port Authority Bus Terminal

The West 42nd Street / Port Authority Bus Terminal is served by the A, C and E trains.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.

To get to know me better, do follow me on Facebook!
