Newark is the county seat of Licking County in central Ohio. It covers 19.8 sq mi (51.3 sq km) and has a population of 48,000 people (2011 estimate). The city is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. It is the second largest Newark in the United States after Newark, New Jersey.

The Newark area has been inhabited since at least two thousand years ago. The people of the Hopewell culture lived here between AD 100 and AD 500, leaving behind earthwork ruins that today dot the Ohio River Valley.

Settlement in the Newark area traces its history to settlers led by General William C Schenck in 1802. He named the settlement after his hometown, Newark, New Jersey. In the early days the settlement grew into a stop on the route between Pittsburgh and Chicago.

Today Newark is home to several corporate headquarters, including Longaberger, Holophane, Owens Corning Giberflass, to name some. Longaberger, a basket manufacturer, has the most outstanding headquarters building, shaped like a giant market basket - their most popular product.

Visiting Newark

Newark is located to the east of Columbus. You can get there from Columbus by taking Interstate 70 until Exit 132 and then continuing on Route 13 (Jacksontown Rd) north.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
