utah.htm"--> Park City is a small city in northern Utah, to the east of Salt Lake City. It covers 17.6 sq mi (45.5 sq km) and has a population of 7,600 people (2011 estimate). The city is 32 miles from downtown Salt Lake City. It is situated on the south end of the Snyderville Basin, about 7,000 ft (2,134 m) above sea level.

Park City enjoys a cool climate due to its high elevation. Warmest month is July, when average high temperature rises to 71.5°F (21.9°C). Coldest month is January, with average low temperature of 9.6°F (-12.4°C). Annual precipitation is only 21.4 in (544 mm).

The history of human settlement in the Park City area goes back to the 19th century, when Mormon pioneers passed through it on their way to settle in Salt Lake City. One of the first to settle here was Parley P. Pratt, who was given a charter to build a toll road through the area in 1846. In the early days, the site was called Parley's Park City, but was shortened to simply Park City by the turn of the 20th century.

In the mid-19th century, various minerals were discovered in the Park City area, sparking a mining boom for gold, silver and lead. A century later, the mines were exhausted. With depressed silver prices making the mines not economically viable, Park City became almost a ghost town by the 1950s.

By the 1960s, the focus has turned to sport recreation, particularly skiing, and tourism. In 2002 it was the site for the ski and snowboarding events of the Winter Olympics, which was held in Salt Lake City. Since then, Park City has received an avalanche of tourists, often greatly outnumbering its residents.

Today Park City is one of the wealthiest in Utah. It is a destination for residents of Salt Lake City during the summer months, as its high altitude makes it much cooler. The city plays hosts to the Sundance Film Festival, attracting film enthusiasts from around the country.

Take Interstate 80 to Kimball Junction. Turn off at Exit 145 and continue south on Utah State Route 224 until you reach Park City.
