Payson is a small city in Gila County, Arizona. Due to its geographical location, it is often called the Heart of Arizona. The city of 15,000 was founded in 1882. It was formerly known as Green Valley or Union Park.

The author Zane Grey made his first visit to Payson in 1918. The area made such an impact on him that he came back regularly, even buying two plots of land in the area. Due to Grey's association with Payson, the city is often called "Zane Grey Country".
