Provo is located in the Utah Valley, 4549 ft (1,387 m) above sea level. July is the hottest month here, when the average high temperature rises to 92°F (33°C). January is the coldest month, when the average low temperature drops to 18°F (-8°C). The area receives just 13.9 in (353 mm) of precipitation in a year.

The first European to arrive in the Provo area is believed to be Spanish Franciscan missionary, Father Silvestre Velez de Escalante, who arrived in 1776. No permanent town was established here until 1849, when Fort Utah was founded by 33 Mormon families from Salt Lake City. In 1850 it was given the name Provo, in honor of an early French Canadian trapper, Étienne Provost, who arrived there in 1825.

Today Provo is home to Brigham Yooung University, a private university operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and named after their 19th century leader. It is today the third largest private university in the country.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
