Pueblo is the county seat and biggest city in Pueblo County, Colorado. Until 1960, it was the second biggest city in the country, but has fallen behind since. Pueblo covers45.4 sq mi (117.5 sq km) and has a population of 105,000 (2011 estimate). The city is located at the confluence of the Arkansas river and Fountain Creek. It is 103 miles (166 km) from Denver.

Pueblo is in a high desert area. Its climate can be classified as steppe. The hottest month in the city is July, when average temperature reaches 91.4°F (33°C). Coldest month is January, when it drops to 14°F (-10°C). You can expect snow between December and March, while rain is heaviest in August, which receives 2.27 in (57.7 mm) of precipitation.

The history of Pueblo goes back to 1842, when traders and fur trappers built a settlement which came to be known as El Pueblo. The earliest settler was one George Simpson. At that time, the Arkansas River formed the boundary between the United States and Mexico.

Early settlers at the Pueblo area were regularly harassed by raiding bands of Native Americans, particularly the Utes and Jacarilla Apaches in 1854, forcing the settlement to be temporarily abandoned until 1858, when a Gold Rush sparked a new wave of settlers. Three different towns namely Pueblo, South Pueblo and Central Pueblo were merged to form the City of Pueblo in 1886, with Bessemer added to it in 1894.

In the 20th century, Pueblo based its economy on its steel mills. However, as the American steel industry went into decline in the 1970's and 80's, so too the fortunes of the city, which is now attempting to diversify into other industries. It is home of the Federal Citizen Information Center. The city is one of the best places to harnass solar energy. A wind turbine factory is also being planned.

Located in the south-central part of Colorado, Pueblo is connected by Interstate 25 toColorado Springs and Denver to the north and Albuquerque to the south. The nearest full-service airport is the Colorado Springs Airport (COS). The Pueblo Memorial Airport receives a select number of flights from Denver.
