Richmond is the county seat of Madison County, Kentucky. Covering 19.3 sq mi (49.9 sq km), it has a population of 31,000 people (2011 estimate). It is situated 948 ft (289 m) above sea level, it is the 7th most populous city in the state.
Richmond was named after Richmond, Virginia. It was founded in 1798 by Colonel John Miller, who found the area having good water and friendly natives.
Richmond is home to the Eastern Kentucky University, founded in 1906 as the Eastern Kentucky State Normal School, to train teachers.

Richmond is connected by Interstate 75 to Lexington to the north and Knoxville to the south.
