South Carolina is a state on the East Coast of the United States. It covers an area of 32,020 sq mi (82,931 sq km), and is the 40th largest state out of 50. The state measures 260 miles (420 km) from east to west and 200 miles (320 km) from north to south.

South Carolina is border to the north by North Carolina and to the southwest by Georgia. It faces the Atlantic Ocean to the east. The highest point in the state is Sassafras Mountain, which is 3,560 ft (1,085 m) tall.

South Carolina has a population of 4.5 million people. It is the 24th most populous state in the country. The biggest city and capital is Columbia. Originally known as the Province of South Carolina, it became a 8th state of the United State on 23 May, 1788.

South Carolina is located within the Eastern time zone (-5/-4 GMT). Its abbreviation is SC.

Charleston International Airport (CHS) is the main airport serving South Carolina.

Amtrak has services linking the major cities of South Carolina with New York City and Florida. Among the trains include the Silver Service and the Palmetto.
