The Spartanburg area was the traditional hunting ground of various Native American tribes such as the Catawba and the Cherokee. Earliest Europeans to arrive in the area were French fur trappers, English woodmen and Scots-Irish farmers.

Spartanburg began life as a courthouse village in the 1780s. It got its name from the Spartan regiment of the South Carolina Militia. The city was incorporated in 1831, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Cowpens, one of the battles in the American Revolutionary War which took place a short distance away.

Spartanburg had a milling industry since the early 19th century, but it was in the post Civil War period that more mills developed in the area, fed by a migration of poor farmers as well as investment from the north. The city hosted training camp for troops during the First and Second World Wars. Its economy floundered in the post war years, but began to rebound in the late 20th century. It is home to a number of big companies and hosts a manufacturing facility for BMW.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
