Springfield, Illinois

Springfield is the capital of Illinois. Located in Sangamon County in the central part of the state, Springfield covers 60.3 sq mi (156 sq km), at an average elevation of 597 ft (182 m). It has a population of 116,000 (2011 estimate), making it the sixth most populous city in Illinois. Springfield observes the Central Standard Time (UTC-6) and in summer the Central Daylight Time (UTC-5).

Springfield experiences a humid continental climate. The warmest month is July, when the average temperature goes up to 76.5°F (24.7°C). Coldest month is January, when it drops to 24.2°F (-4.3°C). May is the wettest month, receiving an average precipitation of 4.06 in (103.1 mm). Snow can be expected in Springfield from December to February.

The Springfield area was first settled by fur trappers and traders in the early 19th century. The city was originally named Calhoun in 1821, after Senator John C. Calhoun of South Carolina. By 1832, the senator had fallen out of favor with the public, and the town was renamed Springfield, after Springfield, Massachusetts.

Springfield was made the capital of Illinois in 1839, largely due to its most famous resident, Abraham Lincoln, who lived there for 24 years as a lawyer before leaving for Washington DC. Due to its long association with Lincoln, Springfield has a number of historic sites attributed to the president. In 2007, then-senator Barack Obama announced his presidential candidacy from the Old State Capitol of Springfield.

Springfield can be reached by Interstate 55, which connects it with Chicago to the north and St Louis to the south. Interstate 72 runs east-west through the city.
