Starkville is a city in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi, USA. It covers 25.8 sq mi (66.9 sq km) and has a population of 24,000 people (2011 estimate). The city was founded in 1835 and was originally called Boardtown. Its name was later changed to Starkville, in honor of Revolutionary hero, General John Stark.
The area around Starkville has seen human habitation for some 2,100 years. Archaeological excavations have uncovered pot fragments and artifacts from this period at the Herman Mound and Village, a site that is today a National Historic Registered site.
The hottest months in Starkville are July and August, with average high temperature of 91°F (33°C). January is the coldest month, when the average low temperature drops to 31°F (-1°C).
