Waterloo is a city in and county seat of Black Hawk County, in Iowa. It covers 62 sq mi (160.6 sq km) and has a population of 68,000. Waterloo observes the Central Standard Time (UTC-6) and in summer the Central Daylight Time (UTC-5).

Waterloo was founded in 1845 when George Melrose and his family settled by the banks of the Cedar River. At that time, the settlement was called Prairie Rapids Crossing. When the town wanted a post office, the person charged with the paperwork, Charles Mullan, had to provide a name with the petition.

According to the story, Mullan flipped through a list of post offices in the United States, and came upon the name Waterloo, which he liked, and on 29 December, 1851, the post office was established by that name. Eventually the town also too on the name Waterloo, and Mullan served as the first postmaster from the opening of the post office until 1854.
