Wilmington is a seaport that serves as county seat of New Hanover County, in the southern part of North Carolina. It covers 41.5 sq mi (107.4 sq km) and has a population of 106,000 people (2011 estimate). The city is the 8th most populous in the state.

Wilmington experiences a humid subtropical climate, similar with the rest of southeastern United States. July is the warmest month, when average high temperature rises to 89.9°F (32.17°C). coldest month is January, with average low temperature of 35.8°F (2.11°C). July gets the most rain at 7.62 in (193.5 mm).

The Wilmington area was inhabited by Native Americans when the French and Spanish arrived in the area. The first permanent European settlement was established by English colonists in the 1720s.

Established as a plantation town, Wilmington has a number of historic buildings from the antebellum period. Due to its origin, the town has a black majority and saw its share of racial violence.
