Apong (3 August 2008)

The
Penang Apong, (
Penang Hokkien:
A3pom3ba3lik1 [a-pom-ba-lek]) or
Chinese apom, is a sweet Nyonya fold-over pancake made from flour and egg and topped with bananas, sweet corn and a sprinkling of sugar. Apong is best eaten when it comes hot from the pan.
The Chinese apom is very different from the
Indian apom, which is much thinner, or the
Ban Cien Koay, which has a harder crust.
Probably the best known Apong seller in Penang is Mr Ung Cheng Guan, whose
Apong Guan pushcar has become an iconic figure along
Burmah Road.
