Ari Putu Mayong (6 April 2017)
Ari Putu Mayong (GPS: 5.41317, 100.32639) is a putu mayong stall along
Dato Kramat Road in
George Town, Penang. It is one of the few stalls that sell both the "puthu" and the "mayong". I met the owner of the stall, whose name is Ari. It was he who told me which is putu and which is mayong. According to Ari, putu is the cup-like steamed cakes while mayong is the string hoppers, or frilly rice flour cakes.
Ari and his family has been selling putu mayong (or putu mayam) at the curbside near Penang Times Square for over ten years. As his stall is located between two Hindu temples - the
Nagarather Sivan Temple on one side, and the
Sri Kamatchi Amman Temple on the other - I suppose quite a number of his customers are visitors to the temples. When I was visiting his stall, I saw a continuous stream of customers stopping along the busy Dato Kramat Road to buy his putu mayong.
