Ariffin Road, Penang (19 May 2018)
Ariffin Road
, now signaged as
Jalan Ariffin, is a small road off
Transfer Road. It is named after
Wan Chik Ariffin (read also
Mohd Ariff Mansion, Hutton Lane,
Ariffin Court,
138-hutton-lane and
Masjid Wan Chik Ariffin), the early 20th century Malay millionaire and patron of Penang boria who donated land for the creation of the road.
There was a sizeable Malay community living in that area, especially from the third quarter of the 19th century. Though the number has declined, they still worship at the nearby
Masjid Jamek Jalan Hatin along Hutton Lane.
Ariffin Road is one of two roads in Penang named after Wan Chik Ariffin, the other being
Ariffin Court a short distance away.
Masjid Wan Chik Ariffin along
Perak Road was also built by him.
