Arratoon Road, George Town, Penang (22 December 2012)
Arratoon Road, or
Jalan Arratoon, is a minor road in George Town. It runs from
Burmah Road to
Northam Road.
Arratoon Road was named in honour of Arratoon Anthony (also written Arathoon and Aratoon), the prominent Armenian in Penang in earlier part of the 19th century. Many of his family members are buried at the Protestant Cemetery. Arratoon Anthony had arrived in Penang in 1819 from Shiraz in Persia. His son A.A. Anthony was the Armenian merchant who founded the A.A. Anthony company in 1830. The company dealt in shipping and insurance, and securities was one of the company's many businesses. The stockbroking business of A.A. Anthony Securities is still around today, although it has been bought over by others.
