Arts & Crafts Architecture Style in George Town

The Arts & Crafts Architecture Style was developed at the second half of the 19th century, and became very popular at the turn of the 20th century. It was also at this time when Penang experienced a period of prosperity. As a result, a number of buildings erected in George Town as well as other places on Penang Island have taken on this design style.

Buildings designed in the arts & crafts style weather well, and tend to become more charming as they age. They are some of the handsomest structures in Penang; strange that there aren't more buildings in this style.

On this page I showcase some of the buildings in Penang, and George Town in particular, that exhibits various interpretations of the Arts & Crafts movement in this part of the world. Incidentally, two of the most famous of these buildings have the word "Loke" to their names.
