Pulau Bunting Bridge, Kedah

Pulau Bunting Bridge, KedahPulau Bunting Bridge, Kedah (25 July, 2015)

Pulau Bunting Bridge (GPS: 5.87875, 100.3456) or Jambatan Pulau Bunting is a bridge connecting Pulau Bunting to Yan District in mainland Kedah. The bridge was constructed between 2002 and 2005. It crosses a sea channel known as Selat Kepala Rambut. It is 2.3 km in total length, comprising a 100-meter causeway at Pulau Bunting connected to a 1.8 km bridge and a 400-meter causeway on the mainland. The most attractive portion is the 80-meter arch cable-stayed bridge.

Although completed, the Pulau Bunting Bridge remains unused today, and Pulau Bunting itself is also not developed. I learned that the Federal Government had wanted a company to build an independent power plant on Pulau Bunting, but somehow the plan never materialize, probably because the Federal Government lost Kedah in the 2008 General Elections.1

Nevertheless, for the sake of tourism, I am describing it here so that, if you are curious enough, you make make a trip to Yan District and have a look at it. Also, now (as of 2015) that the Federal Government is back in power in Kedah, perhaps they should continue with what they had started back then, rather than abandoning it mid way. It is my earnest hope that the bridge will be revived one day, and a lot of people will get to admire it.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
