Hospital Kuala Lumpur (GPS: 3.17042, 101.70168) is the general hospital for the city of Kuala Lumpur. It is located on a 150-acre piece of land bordered by Jalan Tun Razak in the north, Jalan Pahang in the west, Jalan Raja Muda Abdul Aziz to the south and Lorong Raja Muda Abdul Aziz to the east.
Within the grounds of Hospital Kuala Lumpur are various medical institutes, such as the Medical Research Institute and the Pediatric Institute, as well as the hospital mosque. The Malaysian Medical Association is also located here. There is a bank, a post office as well as a police shed within the hospital also. In total, there are some 53 different departments and units within the hospital complex, which has 83 wards and 2300 beds, making it far and away the biggest hospital in Malaysia and one of the biggest in Asia.
Hospital Kuala Lumpur traces its history back to 1870, when it began as a humble district hospital with just three wards. This was gradually upgraded to 25 wards by 1920. A concerted effort to develop Hospital Kuala Lumpur was put in place after Independence, and was carried out in five phases. In Phase One (1962-1968), the maternity hospital was built, as well as the North Ward block, the Radiotherapy department and some hostels for the staff. This was followed by Phase Two (1968-1972), when the South Ward was completed, the Neurology Institute was built, along with the Surgical Block, Radiology Block, National Blood Transfusion Centre and more hostels.
By 1973, the hospital also began functioning as a teaching hospital for the medical students of UKM. More wards were added, while repairs and refurbishment carried out on existing buildings. The latest addition to the complex was the Specialist Complex & Ambulatory Care Centre (SCACC) which was completed in 2013.
