Jalan Sultan Ismail is a major road through Kuala Lumpur. Formerly known as Treacher Road, the road may have been renamed after Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah, who was the fourth Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia (1965-1970) and Sultan of Terengganu.
Jalan Sultan Ismail starts at its interchange with Jalan Kuching in the west, and ends at the intersection with Jalan Imbi, from where it continues as Jalan Kampung Pandan. The northern part of Jalan Sultan Ismail is in the Chow Kit area while the southern part in the Bukit Bintang area.
Jalan Sultan Ismail was named after the 14th Sultan of Terengganu, the late Tuanku Ismail Nasiruddin Shah, who was the fourth Yang di-Pertuan Agong from 1965 to 1970. It comprises at least two roads, Treacher Road and Broadrick Road1. Treacher Road was named after Sir William Hood Treacher, who was the British Resident of Selangor from 1892 to 1896.
The original Treacher Road runs from the junction of Jalan Ampang to the intersection of Jalan Bukit Bintang. It was extended to reach the intersection of Jalan Imbi in the 1960s, when the road was already translated as Jalan Treacher.
The original Broadrick Road runs from Jalan Kuching to the intersection of Jalan Ampang. It was named after Lieutenant Colonel Edward George Broadrick, who served as the British Resident of Selangor from 1910 to 1918.
The elevated tracks of the KL Monorail follows the course of Jalan Sultan Ismail starting from the intersection with Jalan Imbi to the intersection with Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. Along the way are four monorail stations namely the Bukit Bintang Monorail Station, Raja Chulan Monorail Station, Bukit Nanas Monorail Station and Medan Tuanku Monorail Station.
Near the end of Jalan Sultan Ismail, the RapidKL Ampang Line crosses the street. The Sultan Ismail LRT Station is on the south side of the street, across from Takaful Ikhlas.
Jalan Sultan Ismail has one of the highest concentration of shopping malls and skyscrapers in Kuala Lumpur.
