Muzium Telekom (GPS: 3.14906, 101.69919) is a museum dedicated to the history of telecommunications in Malaysia. Located along Jalan Gereja, at the junction of Jalan Bukit Nanas, the Neoclassical building was built in 1928 and originally housed the Central Battery Manual Telephone Exchange. In the old days, this was where people go if they wanted to make long-distance telephone calls.
In 1984, the building was threatened with demolition, when plans were afoot to replace it with a 24-storey building for Telekom. The then prime minister Dato' Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad (now Tun Dr Mahathir) stepped in to rescue the building, and it was eventuallty gazetted as a historic landmark by the National Archives.
Muzium Telekom showcases communications of all types beginning from the earliest times. This includes the Batu Bersurat or Inscripted Stone to the Neolithic paintings in the Tambun Caves. In addition to the museum proper, the Muzium Telekom Building today houses meeting rooms, conference room, library, cafeteria and a prayer room.
Going to Muzium Telekom by public transport
The nearest LRT station is the Masjid Jamek LRT Station. From there, Muzium Telekom is 450 meters away on foot.
