Sang Kancil & Buaya Mural, Kuala Lumpur (6 July, 2016)


Sang Kancil & Buaya Mural (GPS: 3.14484, 101.69646) is a mural on a wall along Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, at the junction of Jalan Tun HS Lee, in Kuala Lumpur. The actual name of the mural is actually Oreo #MYWonderfilled. As is expected, the mural is sponsored by Oreo, via its local manufacturer Mondelez Malaysia, and was completed in late 2015, in line with the effort by the Kuala Lumpur Town Hall (DBKL) to inject some life into the historic sites of the city.

The Sang Kancil & Buaya mural depicts a popular Malay fable, as it leaps out of the pages of a storybook, which is held by a father or teacher, while two pupils look on in awe. The mural shows a crocodile and a mousedeer, with an Oreo in between them - which baffles me somewhat, as I could not understand how the Oreo relates to the two creatures. The crocodile looks quite gleeful, and if you are not familiar with the tale, might mistake it for a green Godzilla. A Malaysian flag flutters over them.

Also added to the mural is a man at a durian stall. He bears an uncanny appearance to Jackie Chan. Further on is a Malay lady at a nasi lemak stall. I'm not sure whether she is a depiction of another celebrity, but in any case, I also could not find corelation between these food stalls and the fable.

I find the Sang Kancil & Buaya mural to be very colourful, and a positive inclusion the enhance the vibrancy of Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock. I only wish that the mural is more focused (we can do without the durian and nasi lemak stalls, which I felt is too much).
